About me and my work
For several years this website has been for my writing and speaking about religion and science. While I am still available to speak about these things, my interests are changing and so are these pages. They will be evolving throughout 2024 into a set of pages for documenting my project of birding all 159 Georgia counties.
I am a teacher, pastor, scientist, writer, and speaker. I teach physics and astronomy at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and recently served as Pastor for Adult Education at First Baptist Church of Decatur.
I write and speak at the intersection of religion and science (or faith and science, or spirituality and science; pick your favorite term). This topic often gets bogged down in conflict, jargon, and pointy-headedness, and I love humanizing it and taking it to non-specialists.
Religion-and-science is the topic of my life. In fact, it’s the story of my life. A science nerd since childhood, I hold a PhD in physics from Duke University and an MDiv from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
In addition to Agnes Scott, I’ve taught at Hampden-Sydney College, Berry College, Candler, and Columbia Theological Seminary. For three years I was a NASA Faculty Fellow at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and have twice served on the faculty of the Emory-Tibet Science Initiative in Dharamsala, India.
My books and articles range from the scientific to the popular. Look here to learn more about them.
I speak regularly at churches, retreats, conferences, and events of all kinds. If you would like to invite me to speak at your event, please fill out the form on my speaking page.
I live in Decatur with my family. I am a fan of Johnny Cash and the planet Saturn. Also birds.
Please contact me if you have any questions, comments, radical remarks, shouts of joy, or other observations.
